Battery Watering System

Filling your batteries can be a real pain! You have to clean the batteries first before you take the caps off so dirt doesn't get inside. Then remove the caps and fill the batteries with distilled water. Sometimes the manufacturers in their wisdom, or lack thereof, have put the batteries in positions that make it difficult if not impossible to add water. You sometimes need a small mirror to see inside the battery and then trying to get the adequate amount of water into the battery and not all over it.

Two years ago I installed a battery filling system that allows me to do just that. I don't even have to pull the battery tray out on my rig. I just open the battery compartment door, pull out a hose that is connected to the batteries, put one end into the distilled water jug and squeeze the pump that is attached to the hose. The system automatically fills the individual cells to the correct level and then shuts that cell off. It then fills the next and then the next and so on, until you can't squeeze the pump anymore. It takes all the frustration and aggravation out of filling the batteries. It also adds years of life to the batteries because they have been properly filled.

The system isn't inexpensive but as one guy remarked to me, “It's not cheap, but like my wife, it's worth every cent." Buying this system is like purchasing a power tool. What shortens the life of a battery is:

• Over filling
• Under filling
• Not maintaining it at least once a month (more often in hotter, drier climates)
• Charging it when the water level is low and then using it

Any of the above can shorten the normal battery life by years! The manufacturer has advised us that by using this system which results in NEVER over or under filling the batteries and you doing your job of regular maintenance, you will extend the life of your batteries anywhere from three to five years.

NOTE: Battery filling is inherently dangerous. Batteries can explode through NO fault of your own. By using this system it is safer, easier, less frustrating and will save you money in the long run.
